Orange juice, anyone?

Isn't it cute? I love it. There was also the layout with a grumpy lil' piece of toast. Awwww!

Yes I am two years old.

I haven't had an actual post in a while. And I apologize for useless rantings that have seemed to flood this blog.

So! I have yet to record anything about school since school started, after frosh week. I am in an engineering program that is unique to Queen's University: Engineering Chemistry. I've had a lot of people ask me what the difference between this and just plain chemical engineering. To clarify, EngChem is a lot more chemistry than just ChemEng. EngChems graduate being able to do everything ChemEngs can do, but we also have a background in pure chemistry, ie. it is like taking a dual degree, one in engineering and one in chemistry. As some like to say, ChemEng = lots of old goo, and EngChem is = a little bit of new goo. So we can make new compounds and what-nots and ChemEngs just optimize and make reactions go faster or slower - kinetics! Yay!

Last year, I had to pick between the two, and as you can tell, ended up picking EngChem. I LOVE CHEMISTRY. Plain and simple, and now I get the best of both worlds. However, we EngChems get to take an awesome course that the ChemEngs don't have to: CHEM 213. It's not chemistry. It's stats. I am doing terribly in this class; the prof shoots out equations at you with no explanation except what the variables are and expects you to figure out the rest. The sad part about this class is that we can calculate EVERYTHING with excel (even if you haven't taken APSC 141, a computers class last year. I'm sure I've ranted about it).

Let me walk you through a typical class: we start by throwing around a ball sharing what we learned last class, we talk about soil samples by comparing them to coloured m&ms and reese's pieces, the prof gives us a demonstrating lab procedure where we have to point out her errors, we take about 10 minutes sitting in silence as she makes us think what idiotic thing she has made a mistake on, and then tells us it was that she wasn't wearing lab goggles, then she goes and shoots some equations at us, making us late for our next class.

Lately, I find myself if I'd be less angry at life if I switched into ChemEng just to get out of that class. And then I think to myself, I LOVE CHEMISTRY, AND I AM GOING TO GRADUATE WITH THIS DEGREE. Even then, sometimes it doesn't help because CHEM 213 IS NOT CHEMISTRY. ULGH Why is it also worth so much more? Just because of these labs? Labs where, even if I didn't wear my jacket and goggles and had an accident, I wouldn't hurt myself in anyway? BECAUSE WE WORK WITH BEER?!?!?!

Wait, this was not supposed to be a post on ranting. Oops.
